Debbie’s Story
The Caravan project has helped to provide families across Glasgow with memorable holidays and experiences. On the 28th of April 2019 we will be taking part in The Kiltwalk to try and raise £10,000 which will go towards providing 1000 kids with a BIG DAY OUT.
One family we have helped is Debbie’s. We were able to give a Debbie a short break with her children in a caravan and the break gave her the chance to relax and build better relationships with her loved ones. Debbie has three children, with one of them being autistic. She said that “every day is a challenge.
It is challenging for the other siblings as they don’t understand him and it is challenging as a mother over 24 hours. Sometimes you could be awake at 3.00am in the morning to help.” Debbie and her family face some very difficult challenges, as the child with autism “has not got any speech yet, so you have to think for him, you don’t know what’s going to happen each day.”
Fortunately, we stepped in and gave Debbie some respite, and the whole family had great fun on one of our holidays. Debbie has said that “seeing your kids happy is a great achievement… On the weekend we went to the roller disco and it was really fun. It’s so beautiful to look forward to a holiday.”
Debbie’s family and many other families take so much away from our caravan holidays and our BIG DAY OUT programmes. Even if it is only for a few days, that small break can give the opportunity for parents and children to take a step back from some of the circumstances they face on a daily basis.
“As a mother or a father, it’s nice to have some space for yourself. You can have a wee cup of tea with other families and you are with other people that are going through the same thing. You make more friends and you get the chance to build love and build relationships with the children”
We want to keep offering families like Debbie’s the chance to have these experiences. You can help us by getting involved with The Kiltwalk on the 28th April and help us achieve our dream of offering 1000 kids with a BIG DAY OUT.
